Featured Gem: Stylist, Fatima Farmer

I started reading Fatima's blog back when I was in high school and just started blogging. During that time I was really into styling so I always checked in on her blog for tips and inspiration. I would also go on and read about her natural hair journey as well as her health and beauty tips. There was always something on her blog that intrigued me. Though I do not know her personally, I find that there is something very genuine about Fatima, and that is very admirable. I chose her to be the first Gem that I feature because I see a lot of myself in her and I find that she can be of inspiration for those interested in the art of fashion styling, natural hair, health + beauty, or simply just blogging. Get to know Fatima below. Enjoy.

Introduce Yourself.
My name is Fatima Farmer and I'm from Paterson, New Jersey. I am 22 years old and I am a freelance fashion stylist/image consultant.

How would you describe your style in one word?
In one word I'd describe my style as Versatile.

Who/What inspires your style?
I had a really hard time answering this question because my style is inspired by so many things. It's always changing, because I'm constantly changing. I love exploring different cultures, traveling and researching vintage fashions. I find inspiration everywhere. Just to name a few of my favorite inspirations 90's gangsta rap, Betty Page, Carmen Jones and Nefertiti.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
In 10 years, I see myself running my own company, styling full-time and traveling the world with my husband & children if God permits it. That would be my "dream life." Honestly speaking, if none that happened I'd be fine as long as I am healthy and happy with whatever course my life takes.

Trend Watch: Summer 2013

Summer 2013 is rapidly approaching and though I never thought I would say this, I am tired of wearing fur. I am tired of the ten extra pounds that it gives me and the lack of freedom I have when I have to truck around the City with it. I came up with a "prediction" board which displays a few trends I believe we will be in this Summer. After giving my crystal ball a rub, this is what I saw:

(From left to right)
"Don't believe me? Just watch!"
Color Prism Pieces: "Hipsters" are not the only ones who will be wearing color prisms across their chest this Summer.

Holographic EVERYTHING: I have fallen deeply in love with everything holographic. Holographic pieces have been seen everywhere from the runway to H&M. I am predicting that we will be seeing a lot more of it this Summer.

Mix Matched Outfits: My favorite! If you haven't come to the realization that it is okay to mix your prints and patterns, here's a newsflash!  There's nothing more appealing to me than a tasteful mix matched outfit. I love the idea of mixing prints and patterns if done tastefully. Just be careful.

Bold Floral Pants for Men: Now, I know a lot of men probably think that they can't rock anything floral print. Those are the ones who are afraid to step out of the box and try something new. Bold floral print is becoming very popular in the male fashion scene. From hats to backpacks and even shirts. I am ready to see who's man enough to rock bold floral print pants this Summer. I can guarantee Zara will have some floral pants for men very soon. European men shouldn't be the only ones bold enough to wear floral pants!

Toro y Moi

I am very picky about my music. I am also very picky about what I post, especially when it comes to being the first, last, fourteenth; you get it. OCD. Anyway! I always get this amazing feeling when I come across good, new[to me], music. It's a breath of fresh air. Sure, "twerk it" "pop that" is very entertaining at times, but it's not something that I can fathom daily. Not too long ago I came across Toro y Moi. What attracted me to him was his face. I stared at a picture of him for a good 10 minutes trying to figure out whether he was black, Asian, black + Asian, or "other"; not that it mattered anyway. There was just something very intriguing about his look. I ended up googling him and found out that he is Filipino and Black AND that he was is artist. An amazing artist at that. I guess I have been hiding under a rock. I am currently obsessed with him and his music. He puts me in the mindset of Childish Gambino + Metronomy + Pheonix with XXYYXX, SBTRKT influence. I am obsessed. If you too are into those artists as well as "60's nostalgia", you will be too.

"Letter from the Editor"

(Insert Cliche Photo Here)
Blogging truly takes dedication talent and passion. After blogging for almost five years I decided that I wanted to take my talent, dedication, and passion for blogging and use it for something more. This is something that had been heavy on my heart for years. I decided that it was finally time for me put my dreams and ideas ideas into action! I decided create a website that will educate and inspire as well as serve as a creative outlet for me. I also wanted to create a website that would allow me to give my perspective on things while providing inspiration to others at the same time.

After ages of figuring out the perfect name I decided on Eccentric Gem. Eccentric meaning "unconventional"; and Gem as play on my mothers name, however, Gem is also in reference to a noun that is; "rare, exquisite, eye catching etc." I then realized that it had a very feminine feel to it; but I wanted my website to appeal to both men, women, and everything in between. I thought about creating two different websites, one for women and one for men, but, I felt it would only be right to combine the interests of both genders. So, I decided on Eccentric Unity. Where all things eccentric unite.

I have extremely high expectations for Eccentric Unity | NYC. After working very and hard putting my thoughts together, I'm proud to say that I'm satisfied with where the future of this website is headed. Eccentric Unity | NYC is still improving and will continue to improve as time goes on. I hope that all who visit this website will get something out of it.

I dedicate Eccentric Unity | NYC to those who seek/find inspiration from the "unconventional".

Chloe
